     One of the
strangest evolutions in rock music history occurred when Genesis went from a respected English progressive rock band in
the ‘70s to an international (and ubiquitous) hit machine in the ‘80s, and then to virtual non-existence in
the ‘90s.  The vast majority of people only know Genesis from their (often goopy) ‘80s hits, and probably
don’t realize the guy who sang Shock The Monkey and In Your Eyes used to front them, but their two halves are so
different that an accurate compilation telling their entire story is quite difficult.  Amazingly enough, Genesis’
style actually slowly developed from one extreme to the other, and they didn’t just randomly decide to sell out
once the calendar turned to 1980.  This is an interesting story which deserves to be told, but this compilation does not
do that.

While Peter Gabriel’s involvement with the group might surprise non-UK listeners, his
replacement Phil Collins eventually became synonymous with the band despite “merely” being their drummer at
first.  Things became more confusing when Collins began his own solo career in parallel with the band, and produced even
more hits that can fill up a full CD themselves.  Some of these sounded noticeably different from Genesis (such as
covers You Can’t Hurry Love and A Groovy Kind Of Love, both UK #1 hits), while others did not.  Perhaps a
different compilation could help distinguish between the two artists, but this one purposely blurs a line which
debatably barely existed.

Singles Machine tells a story which likewise may not have actually happened, but
nevertheless is seen far too often.  It describes a once-respected art rock band that slowly tipped the tide toward hits
after losing their frontman, and then lost control once the greatest selling-out decade exploded.  Hits practically
rained from the sky, but like a storm it only lasted so long before ending abruptly.  Collins and Genesis could do no
wrong in the 80s, but both were suddenly done following 1991’s We Can’t Dance.  Collins has only cracked
the top 40 once since 1993’s Both Sides Now after doing so 20 times (including 14 top 10 and 7 #1s) in the
previous 12 years, and that was for the Tarzan soundtrack.  Genesis themselves have not even charted since their last
album with Collins.  So what did all of this selling out and incredible chart success add up to?  A silly Guns ‘n
Roses-esque song about how an old white guy can’t dance and several decades of forced retirement.

I
don’t hate Genesis, and their amount of quality hits is still astounding especially from the time when they were
written.  But there are few better examples of rich excess where at some point making money became the band’s
only priority (ironically, both Gabriel and guitarist Mike Rutherford enjoyed significant chart success themselves
during the same period before likewise practically disappearing once the ‘90s began).  This is therefore a
compilation born out of hate, devoted to its story of maximum chart success and profit while deliberately not being a
definitive compilation for either Genesis or Collins.  Business is about streamlining and sanitation and maximizing
profit while maintaining a stellar clean image no matter how inaccurate that might be.  In a time where money flowed
freely, no music group did that better than Genesis.  Singles Machine may not be the compilation anyone wants, but in
the year where the rich strike back and the poor can go f*ck themselves, it’s the compilation they deserve.
